Mucha Tela Project organizes a beach clean up in Formentera

Mucha Tela Projectis the environmental project promoted byLes Créations de la Maisonto help clean up waste on our coasts. This is our way of compensating for the use of resources and taking sides to alleviate the possible deterioration due to the amount of garbage generated by humans.

We have collaborated with the Vellmarí diving center with which we have organized two camps for children on the Bocana beach in Ses Estanys des Peix in Formentera. These camps have consisted of an awareness workshop and a collection and cleaning.

The objective of the workshop has been to educate the little ones to care for and preserve the sea. Specifically, we have focused on the importance of safeguarding and protecting Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant endemic to the Mediterranean of vital importance for the ecosystem, in addition to emphasizing microplastic, teaching children to locate microplastic remains in sand, water and seaweed.

Posidonia is a marine plant that only grows in the Mediterranean Sea. It is of great importance, since it is the habitat of many species, it absorbs CO2 and transforms it into O2, it helps to preserve the beaches, it is a great regulator of the marine ecosystem. But due to the enormous amounts of plastic, irresponsible boat anchoring, and climate change, Posidonia is being seriously threatened. If we want a healthy Mediterranean sea, we have to recover its physicochemical parameters (temperature and composition) and ensure the survival of the posidonia, which plays a fundamental role.

The collection and cleaning of the beaches (coasts) and also of the seabed has consisted of a diving and snorkeling session to collect plastic and debris. The children collected a total of 10 kilos of waste, including bottle caps, lollipop sticks, car batteries, plastic bags and pieces of plastic fruit boxes.

After the collection, they studied and sampled the plastics and carried out an experiment where they were able to observe the amount of micro plastic that many of the products we use daily contain.
